Do You Know What I Know?

By Trillia Newbell

I am confident that I have readers who do not know why we celebrate so much this season. Perhaps you believe that the Advent season is a time for gifts and holiday traditions. Or maybe you are a Christian who has been utterly discouraged and all this season does is remind you of pain, suffering, and disappointments. Or perhaps you are jolly, yet your joy is rooted in the many events, but when January 2 rolls around you will find yourself battling despondency.

Whoever you are I have some good news via my friend and pastor, John Piper. We celebrate not because of traditions, not because of the gifts, not because of friends and family, and not because of our circumstances. We celebrate, and you can celebrate, because of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came to dwell among those who would despise Him. He was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, walked this earth performing miracles and died on a cross. He died taking the full wrath of God that we deserved and he rose, defeating death.

Jesus invites you to receive forgiveness for your transgressions and sin that separate you from a holy God. Jesus invites you to find true and everlasting joy. Unspeakable joy. Joy that can only be found through a relationship with God through His Son.

This is all I know. This is why I can celebrate this season–not as someone who has a perfect life–but as one who has been redeemed by the blood of Christ.

This season we will hear the little tune playing on the radio with the line, “do you know what I know?”   If not, you can!
