New Voices: Lina AbuJamra

Doctor, writer, and woman after the heart of God, Lina AbuJamra writes from her experience and her faith. Based out of Mount Lina AProspect, a suburb of Chicago, AbuJamra is a Pediatric Emergency Room Doctor and women’s ministry director for Harvest Bible Chapel in Rolling Meadows.

She is a faithful blogger who has just completed her first book. Get to know more about AbuJamra in this Q&A:

Q: Excited to have you on the blog and congratulations on your book. Tell us, how long have you been writing?

AbuJamra: For as long as I can remember! But the blog I started about 4 years ago with daily entries for the last 3 years. I self-published 3 bible studies but have just now completed my first trade book.

Q: When did you discover you enjoyed writing?

AbuJamra: I knew I could write back when I took standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, MCAT, and found that I was pretty much average in everything except in writing. I typically scored in the 99 percentile in writing. About 10 years ago I started a weekly newsletter for the Sunday school class I taught and I’d catch people reading it in the church service. I knew God had gifted me a little more than the next person.

The more I wrote the more I realized how much I loved it. I feel like I express my thoughts best in writing. There is nothing like the moment when you know you haven’t just communicated an idea but the feeling behind it as well.

It brings me joy and glorifies the Lord. When I write I feel like I’m flying.

thrive coverQ:  What is the name and premise of the book?

AbuJamra: I just finished Thrive: The Single Life as God Intended. It will come out May 1, 2013 by Moody Publishers. I’m currently working on Stripped: When God’s Call Grabs a Hold of Your Life. It’s due May 1, 2013. It’s crazy!!

Thrive is about thriving as a single (imagine that!). I use 1 Corinthians 7 as the Biblical premise, and cover attitudes that every single must have in order to thrive, as well as obstacles that every single must overcome to thrive. The book shows how singleness is not plan B, but God’s actual plan for singles today.

Stripped is a book for Christians. I find that many followers of Christ answer the call to follow Jesus but quickly become disillusioned with the road ahead. In this book, I cover what happens in the gap between the call and the fulfillment of it. I explain how to survive the stripping process that every Christian must go through in order to be used by God, and how to move past the pain of being stripped and fully enjoy the Lord through the journey.

Q:  Why are these topics important to you?

AbuJamra: I love God’s word. I love how practical it is. I love the fact that God has already given us all the answers we need for life in His book. My goal is to bring His book to life to this generation of believers in order to push them to be more for Him.

Q:  Where can we find your writing otherwise?

AbuJamra: You can find me at livingwithpower.org. I write every day except Sunday. I do lots of giveaways on Fridays.

Q:  If you were to sit down with a blogger who desires to write a book what is one piece of advice you’d give them?

AbuJamra: There’s nothing sexy about it. It’s plain hard work, and as Anne Lamott likes to say, the first draft is always poor (not in those words). The key for me is to get the words out of my mind and onto a piece of paper. Then I rework it until it says what I meant for it to say. It’s plain hard work and discipline. Set specific goals and keep them. Reward yourself when you meet those goals. Use the blogs you’ve written and rework them into your book!

Q:  So we might get to know your journey a little better, briefly share your testimony.

AbuJamra: I grew up in Beirut, Lebanon in a Christian home. I heard the gospel story at a young age and accepted Christ when I was about 7 years old. We moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin in 1987 when I was 15 mainly because of the war. It was the summer after we moved that I went to camp and really came of age in my faith. I understood that God wanted all of me, and that he had a plan for my life that demanded my all. I gave myself to him afresh that summer and have never looked back.

Q:  What is your favorite leisure activity?

AbuJamra: I love to read, and I enjoy playing words with friends. I love social networking, and I am pretty active. I run, bike, walk, and drink my share of coffee at Starbucks.

Q: Where do you turn when you are discouraged?

AbuJamra: Yes! I love Lamentations 3, and Romans 8, and the book of Philippians. This year I’m memorizing James and I love chapter 1. I usually claim my favorite book as the main one I’m teaching that year, so this year, it’s Genesis! You can hear the teachings on my blog under media.

Q:  Anything else you want to add, now is the time…anything?

I can’t wait to meet Trillia, although I really enjoy following her on twitter and on facebook! I love living under God’s providence and I would say that every detail in my life can be traced directly to God’s providence in my life.

I can’t wait to meet you either. Getting to connect with other Christian women has been a highlight for me in this Internet era we find ourselves in. Thank you for participating and we look forward to your books!
