“Not In Me” by The Gospel Coalition

By Trillia Newbell

I’ve had the honor to serve through singing on my church worship team for nearly 14 years.  I use the word “sing” because if I wrote worship on my worship team, perhaps that would be confusing, though I must say, it is much more accurate. Hearing the preached Word on Sunday mornings is most anticipated by me, but an incredibly close second is getting to join the congregation in worship through singing. I love to sing to God, about God, and for God (to bless Him). And thankfully God isn’t looking for perfect worshippers. Let me take that back, He is, which is why Jesus had to be our perfect substitute. Sunday morning during our worship time my heart continually leapt for joy as I sang these gospel truths in the song “Not In Me”  so I wanted to share the lyrics and a few links of interest with you today.

The Gospel Coalition has teamed up with some talented songwriters and musicians to create Songs for the Book of Luke. You can listen to the entire CD via their website. Recently, TGC also announced a new blog dedicated to the practice of worship.  Matt Boswell explained more:

To help further the conversation of gospel-centered worship, we are pleased to announce the launch of the TGC Worship blog. As church leaders and preaching pastors have found The Gospel Coalition to be a wealth of resources both theological and practical, the new TGC Worship blog seeks to equip all those entrusted with oversight of congregational worship. Ranging from topics of theology and philosophy to practical insights and songwriting, the goal of this blog is to equip and encourage leaders of worship to remain faithful to Scripture while engaging the culture with art to the glory of God. Click through all those links and be blessed! But first, read these words and soak up these truths. You can listen here.

No list of sins I have not done, no list of virtues I pursue,

No list of those I am not like can earn myself a place with you.

O God! Be merciful to me. I am a sinner through and through.

My only hope of righteousness is not in me, but only you.

No humble dress, no fervent prayer, no lifted hands no tearful song,

No recitation of the truth can justify a single wrong.

My righteousness is Jesus’ life. My debt was paid by Jesus death.

My weary load was borne by Him And He alone can give me rest.

No separation from the world, no work I do, no gift I give

Can cleanse my conscience, cleanse my hands,

I cannot cause my soul to live.

But Jesus died and rose again. The pow’r of death is overthrown!

My God is merciful to me and merciful in Christ alone.

My righteousness is Jesus’ life. My debt was paid by Jesus death.

My weary load was borne by him, and He alone can give me rest,

And He alone can give me rest.
