I’m a Loser Mom

By Trillia Newbell

I was with some of my girlfriends and we were chatting about blogs. One of the ladies piped up and said, “I want to start a blog called ‘I’m a Loser Mom.’” We all laughed and then expressed how our lives really look verses how it looks on Facebook. We joked about getting up at 9:00 a.m. and taking pictures of our messy rooms, feeding our kids cookies for breakfast, and popping in a movie one too many times.

Isn’t that a little more like it? There are definitely days when I wake up at 5:00 a.m. and get amazing amounts of things done and the kids are obedient and I’ve read my Bible and I got a workout in and…There are most definitely days like that. But, because life is hectic, kids are unpredictable, sickness comes, cars breakdown, hormones rage, and schedules collide, sometimes our lives look like a tornado and our homes reflect it.

So where does all the pressure to be magazine perfect come from?  You know: Southern Living style homes, Martha Stewart table settings, and Food Network meals. I’m going to guess the pressure is from: You, me, she, and her. Ladies, we can be our worst enemies yet, we are all trying to do the same thing-live. No more pressure to be magazine perfect! It’s an illusion. All those people have 15 designers and staff helping them. I’ve been in commercials- the food isn’t real! If it is real, they’ve had a few “takes” to make it just-right. And professional photographers can make just about anything look fabulous.

There is nothing wrong with striving to be diligent, organized and hardworking. Actually, the Lord commends the hard worker and Proverbs warns that “Whoever is slack in his work is a brother to him who destroys,” (Proverbs 18:9). When I wake up in the morning I’m not thinking, “Today I’m going to be slack and lazy and maybe even everything will be chaotic.” Life just happens to work out that way-sometimes.

Do you feel like a loser mom? If so, no worries- you’re in good company. We all at times feel a bit like “losers”. Here’s the good news, you aren’t a loser. Actually you are made in the image of God.[i] You were fearfully and wonderfully made![ii]  God takes pleasure in those who fear Him.[iii] He is a mighty one who will save and he REJOICES over you with gladness![iv]

I think I’ll think on God’s delight over me next time I look at my incredibly messy living room that I do intend to clean but have instead been tending to the immediate needs of my children. God wants my heart. As I seek after him and his kingdom like I am seeking treasure[v], he will give me all I need.[vi]

(Dedicated to my loser mom friends- you know who you are! )
